What We Treat — And When We Refer You to Your GP

One of the most important parts of practising chiropractic responsibly is being clear about what it can genuinely help with, and just as clear about what it can’t.

At Be Amazing Chiropractic in Charlestown, Dr. Adam Arnold works on that basis with every patient: a thorough assessment first, honest findings second. The plan either starts with chiropractic care, or points you toward the right person if it shouldn’t.

What we treat at Be Amazing Chiropractic — Dr Adam Arnold in Charlestown

Everyday Back, Neck & Posture Complaints

Chiropractic care has the strongest evidence behind it for musculoskeletal complaints — problems with how your spine, joints and muscles are moving and functioning. This is the everyday core of what we treat: lower back pain, poor posture linked to desk work or long commutes, tension-type headaches connected to neck and upper back tightness, and sciatica-type leg pain tied to the lower back.

Every one of these starts the same way: a thorough history and physical examination, because what’s actually driving a patient’s symptoms varies significantly from person to person. We don’t offer a one-size-fits-all program, and results can’t be guaranteed.

Joint, Nerve & Overuse Injuries

Traditional Chiropractic Care and Zone Technique cover spinal and joint function well, but Dr. Arnold’s training in Quantum Neurology® adds a further, structured look at how the nervous system is functioning through the arms, hands and legs — genuinely useful for the more peripheral, overuse-type complaints that don’t always come to mind first when people think “chiropractor.”

That includes carpal tunnel syndrome and other nerve-related hand and wrist symptoms, tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow, hip and knee pain, runner’s knee, shoulder pain, and less common presentations like foot drop.

Quantum Neurology® is not used to diagnose disease, and Dr. Arnold is upfront that he is not a neurologist and doesn’t claim to be. It’s one more structured lens alongside a proper physical assessment, not a substitute for medical care — but for tradespeople, keen gardeners, weekend athletes and anyone doing repetitive gripping or loading, it’s often the missing piece a standard spinal check alone would miss.

Children & Growing Bodies

Kids’ bodies take on physical stress most parents don’t think to connect to a chiropractor: heavy school bags carried daily, hours hunched over screens, awkward growth spurts, sports collisions, and simply learning to walk and fall safely.

Dr. Arnold provides gentle, age-appropriate assessment for children from infancy through the teenage years, focused on musculoskeletal function, movement, posture and comfort — never a scaled-down adult adjustment. Our Pediatric Chiropractic page covers this in full, including how care differs by age group and when we’d refer a child to a GP or paediatrician instead.

What We Don’t Treat

There’s a clear list of things chiropractic care is not the right tool for, and we say so plainly rather than trying to manage them here. That includes medical emergencies, fractures or dislocations, infections and systemic disease, cancer-related pathology, and acute internal organ conditions.

None of these are things a chiropractic assessment is designed to identify or treat, and pretending otherwise would put a patient’s health at risk. If your presentation points toward any of these, our job is to recognise that quickly and get you to the right place.

Signs We Screen For At Every Assessment

Part of a thorough initial history and examination is actively looking for signs that something other than a straightforward musculoskeletal issue might be going on. These “red flags” include pain that isn’t related to movement or position, night pain that doesn’t ease with rest, unexplained weight loss, and fever or other signs of systemic illness.

If any of these come up in your history or examination, chiropractic care isn’t started — instead, you’re referred to your GP or the appropriate specialist first. Exclusion before treatment is a standard part of modern, evidence-informed chiropractic practice, not an extra step we skip to save time — consistent with the Chiropractic Board of Australia’s codes and guidelines for safe, evidence-informed practice.

Why GPs and Allied Health Refer Patients to Us

Zone Technique whole-body assessment framework at Be Amazing Chiropractic in Charlestown

Chiropractors in Australia are registered primary contact practitioners, so you don’t need a referral from a GP to book with us. Plenty of our patients do come to us on a GP’s recommendation, generally for straightforward, well-defined musculoskeletal complaints once anything more serious has already been ruled out.

Dr. Adam Arnold brings more than 30 years of Australian clinical chiropractic experience to every assessment, along with two structured frameworks that are relatively uncommon in the wider Newcastle region: certification as a Zone School Practitioner in the Zone Technique, and training in Quantum Neurology®. Traditional Chiropractic Care — hands-on assessment of spinal alignment, joint function and musculoskeletal health — remains the foundation underneath both.

When We Refer You Out

Referral isn’t limited to your very first visit — it can happen at any point in a course of care if something changes or doesn’t respond the way we’d expect.

If an assessment or a change in your symptoms suggests something outside chiropractic’s scope, Dr. Arnold will refer you back to your GP, a medical specialist, or hospital care as appropriate, and explain clearly why. Chiropractic care is intended to complement your existing medical care, not replace it.

How This Fits With Your Wider Healthcare

If your concern does turn out to be one we can help with, it’s worth knowing how a visit might be funded. See our guides on Medicare coverage for chiropractic care, workers compensation coverage, and CTP coverage after a car accident.

Be Amazing Chiropractic also bills DVA (Gold and White Card) directly — see our DVA coverage guide — so eligible veteran patients can attend without out-of-pocket cost.
